In Springfield, Illinois, in the years before the Civil War, a young lawyer named Abraham Lincoln (Henry Fonda) has a law practice that gains him fame when he takes on notorious murder cases. Despite the death of his beloved Ann (Pauline Moore), he is able to apply his sharp mind to the defense of Adam Clay (Eddie Quillan) and his brother Matt (Richard Cromwell) who are wrongfully charged with murder by the Prosecutor Felder (Donald Meek). The appeal of distraught mother Abigail Clay (Alice Brady) moves Lincoln to put full energy into his witty defense. Lincoln is able to make a donkey out of witness Jack Cass (Ward Bond) and win the hand of Mary Todd (Marjorie Weaver).
