A scientist (Bill Pullman) is sent to Haiti to investigate a drug that is used in voodoo rituals to make people appear dead. He is aided by a local physician with whom he has a relationship. As he attempts to find the drug, he is under surveillance from the Haitian secret police. They do not wish him to find the drug and even kidnap him and torture him by strapping him naked to a chair and hold a hail over his genitals and drive it through his scrotum. He gets some of the drug to analyze and finds that it can make people appear dead but hours later they come out of it. This could lead to their being buried alive. He returns to Haiti but later is given the drug and taken for dead and himself buried alive. He is rescued and is able to show the police official who tortured him that he is vindicated.
