In the movie Local Hero “Mac” MacIntyre (Peter Riegert) is an up-and-coming young Texas oil executive who has been sent by his quirky boss Felix Happer (Burt Lancaster) to purchase the entire small town of Ferness on the coast of Scotland. The townspeople are very poor, and when Mac arrives they are mostly overjoyed at the possibility of receiving a windfall from America. There is a big roadblock, however, in the person of a beach bum named Ben Knox (Fulton MacKay), who won’t move away from his shack on the beach. Mac is taken aback to discover that Ben actually owns the beach, and without Ben’s large and important tract of land the oil company’s plan to replace the village with a refinery is certain to fail.
